Newsletter - April 2004
Dear Cooper Point Neighbors,
We send our annual newsletter to every household on Cooper
Point. We hope that it gives you some useful information about some of the
things that are happening in our area.
One of the major accomplishments last year was a complete
revision of our web site. We want this site to become an information source
and communication tool for everyone on Cooper Point. We would like to use
the site to communicate with each other on areas of mutual concern, such as
crime, safety or land use. For example, mail theft appears to be on the
rise. See our Neighborhood Watch page for some ways
you can minimize your exposure.
Population growth and development pressures continue to present challenges
for our local governments and neighborhoods. The commercial areas of the
west side of Olympia seem overwhelmed with traffic. Many more large housing
developments are planned for the west side. The Cooper Point Association
board remains committed to good planning that allows development, but not at
the expense of overall quality of life. We are particularly worried about
water quality issues that accompany rapid growth. Recently we have been
raising issues about an extremely large housing development proposed near
Marshall Middle School. This development will significantly increase
traffic, and will probably harm the environment of Grass Lake and Green Cove
Creek. ( See our Current Development Projects
and Evergreen Hills pages)
Our Fire District continues its planning process, analyzing how to structure
fire and emergency services on Cooper Point. The current placement of fire
stations may not match the way Cooper Point has developed over the years.
Our Fire District has created a citizen advisory committee to help with its
planning. Chuck McKinney from our Board is serving in this group, and has
provided us with a McLane Citizen Advisory Board
Update.
Our Annual Meeting will be the evening of April 20th, in the multi-purpose
room of Marshall Middle School, at 7:00 pm. We will have speakers on two
important topics. The first will be a report from the Thurston Regional
Planning Council (TRPC) on the demographics of Cooper Point. The second
speaker will be a Captain from the Thurston County Sheriff's office. He will
give us a brief presentation about crime trends on Cooper Point, along with
ideas on how neighborhoods can form partnerships with The Sheriff's Office
to combat crime.
I hope that you are interested in participating in some of these issues.
Please Join the Association as an active or contributing member.
Sincerely,
Eric Johnson, President, Cooper Point Association |
