Cooper Point Appreciative Inquiry Project

About the Appreciative Inquiry Process
(PDF Brochure available here)

The Cooper Point Appreciative Inquiry Project encourages civic engagement among the Cooper Point residents by exploring life on Cooper Point. Community planning efforts are nothing new to Cooper Point. The area has a rich history of activism and citizen involvement, beginning with land-use planning that culminated with remarkable results.

This project hopes to build on that history and, using a technique called Appreciative Inquiry, re-energize the community and increase its capacity to work together for an even better Cooper Point.

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a model for organizational change that is based on assets rather than problems. AI’s foundation is that more is learned by discussing what is successful than by discussing what is unsuccessful. Focusing on the positive generates energy and confidence for the task of implementing changes.

Appreciative Inquiry is used by a variety of organizations. It has also been used as a visioning and planning process for entire communities. This kind of “mass mobilized” inquiry is planned for Cooper Point.

The AI process involves four steps: Discovery, Dream, Design, and Destiny.

During the Discovery process, residents will interview their friends and neighbors to discover what they cherish, value, and appreciate about living on Cooper Point.

These narratives will be used during the Dream phase, when residents will meet and discuss the common themes revealed in the stories.

How the project progresses through the steps of Design (determining a course of action) and Destiny (taking action) depends primarily on the values, visions and energy generated by the participants.
